Job Hunt

Hello from New York City! Well, kids, it's official. Summer is O-V-E-R. I returned to NYC about a week and a half ago for our early interview week. For those of you unfamiliar with the joys of on-campus recruiting let me paint a picture. 5 days - hundreds of employers - and approximately 400 job hungry law students in power suits. It is pure maddness. I had 35 interviews over the course of 5 days (eeeeeek), attended two firm coctail parties, and told the same damn story about my summer employment (which was fantastic, until I told it the 35th time) about a billion times. It was one of the most entertaining, albeit completely hellish weeks I have ever had. My days generally started at 9. Interviews ended at 5. My evenings were either spent reasearching firms or attending firm events. I had some stunning interview moments and some not-so-stunning. My personal favorite was when asked by a firm who uses penquins in its marketing (note on firm marketing - firms in NYC try hard to differentiate themselves through marketing - as a result I am now the proud owner of many school supplies, chocolates, rubber stress balls and animals, and even a USB storage device for my computer care of the firms I interviewed with. One firm was even giving away etch-a-sketches). So...back to the penquin firm. When asked, "why us?" I responded with a completely straight face - "The penguins". I think I thought it was much funnier than my interviewer, but he gave me a second interview regardless. I was outdone by my roommate however who answered the question "how do you feel about your law school transcript" with..."FINE. How do YOU feel about YOUR lawschool transcript." Apparently sarcasm works wonders, she got a callback.

So...the week worked itself out and I now have several 2nd interviews at firms that I am excited about. I am flying back to MN for a weekend to visit a couple of firms, heading to Chicago another weekend to see a firm there, and down to D.C. for at least a day. That combined with a full schedule of classes, an Iowa wedding weekend, and T.A.ing for a first year class it is shaping up to be a busy semester. I hope you all are well and I love you! Keep in touch.
